Election season is heating up as the McKinney City Council and mayoral candidates are vying for the three seats that are going to be on the May 9 ballot.
However, not all of the candidates have voted in recent council and mayoral elections, or even at all in Collin County. According to the Collin County Elections Office, the candidates either voted or did not vote in elections since 1992: (candidates are listed in alphabetical order)
Mayoral candidates -
- George C. Fuller, Jr.-was listed as never having voted in any elections in Collin County since he has lived in McKinney and registered to vote in Collin County on March 9 of this year, said Collin County Elections Administrator Sharon Rowe on March 24. Fuller had also never been listed as voting in any election in Texas under the name of George C. Fuller or George C. Fuller, Jr.
Fuller said on April 4 that he tried to vote by absentee ballot in the November, 2008 election but learned he was not re-gistgered and then registered to vote. Fuller also said on April 4 that he did vote in previous city and presidential elections, and recently called Rowe to see why his voting history was not found under his name at the Collin County Elections Office.
"Absolutely I have voted in McKinney. I have petitioned for my voting record with the Texas Secretary of State's Office and Votec, which verifies voting records. I'm working with Sharon Rowe to verify all of my previous addresses to check my voting record," Fuller said on April 4. Fuller's voter registration will become effective on April 9.
- Brian Loughmiller - was listed as voting in the 2008 presidential and general election; June 14, 20008 at-large city council runoff election; May 10, 2008 city and McKinney ISD elections; May 12, 2007 city and McKinney ISD elections; the November, 2006 general and special election; May 13, 2006 city council, and mayoral election; and the 2006 McKinney ISD election. Loughmiller has also voted in the city and McKinney ISD elections during each election since 1999. He also voted in the 2004, 2000, 1996, and 1992 presidential and general elections, according to an open records request for voter history.
District 1 candidates -
- Don Day - was listed as voting in the 2008 presidential and general election; the June 14, 2008 at-large council runoff election; May 10, 2008 city and McKinney ISD general elections; May 13, 2006 city and school elections; May 7, 2005 city and school elections; May 15, 2004 city and school elections; November, 2003 Collin County bond election; June 1, 2002 city runoff election; and the May 4, 2002 city election. He also voted in the 2004 presidential election.
- Maurice Malvern - was listed as voting in the November presidential and general election; the November, 2006 general and special election; May 2006 city and McKinney ISD elections; November, 2005 general and special election; May, 2005 city and McKinney ISD elections; November, 2004 general and special election; September, 2003 Constitutional Amendment; May, 2003 city and McKinney ISD elections; June, 2001 District 1 and District 3 City Council runoff elections; May, 2001 city and McKinney ISD elections; November, 2000 presidential election; February, 1999 county and city bond election; November, 1998 general election; and a 1996 primary election.
- Alonzo James Tutson - was only originally listed as only having voted in the November, 2008 presidential and general election, according to Collin County Elections Officials.
However, Tutson ran for the at-large council seat in the 2001 council election and voted for himself in that election, he said on March 20. Tutson said on March 20 that he in fact has voted in every primary and presidential election since 1996. Tutson said he voted during the local election and bond election of 1999. He added that the Collin County Elections Office has many inaccuracies.
"Not only did I vote during the local election of 2001 but to not vote in 2001 would have shown that I didn't believe I was the best candidate for the at-large council seat because I ran that year," Tutson said.
Rowe confirmed on March 23 that Tutson had in fact voted in many city, McKinney ISD, county, and national elections. However, his previous voter history could not be obtained when McKinneyUpdate.com first inquired about it via a public information request because Tutson's voter registration had been cancelled in Collin County after Tutson moved to Denton County, Rowe said on March 23. The Collin County Elections Office does not merge someone's voting history from cancelled registrations files into the voting history after someone's voter registration is reinstated in Collin County, Rowe said.
"His voting history has now been corrected. The voting history wasn't merged because he moved out of the county and his voter registration in Collin County was cancelled on Feb. 9, 2005. In this situation we don't routinely go back and look at the voting history before someone's voting registration was cancelled. Because this raises an issue we went ahead and merged the voting history so it wouldn't cause any confusion for the election," Rowe said.
- Randall Wilder - was listed as voting in the November, 2008 presidential and general election; the March, 2008 primary election; November, 2006 general and special election; May, 2006 city and McKinney ISD elections; November, 2004 president, general and special election; Sept. 13, 2003 Constitutional Amendment election; May 3, 2003 city and McKinney elections; April 14, 1998 primary runoff election; March 10, 1998 primary election; and the June, 1993 special runoff election.

-
David Brooks - was listed as voting by absentee ballot in the Nov. 7, 2000 presidential and general election; the April 11, 2000 primary election; Feb. 12, 2000 McKinney ISD bond election; April, 20, 1999 in the county and city elections; Nov. 3, 1998 presidential and general election; May 5, 1998 city and McKinney ISD elections; primary elections from 1994 to 1998; and the May 3, 1997 city and McKinney ISD elections. Brooks recently reinstated his voting registration with Collin County in March of this year as it was cancelled in 2000 after he and his family moved to Waco, where Brooks worked for Baylor University, Brooks said on March 17. Brooks reregistered to vote on March 9 of this year in Collin County and his voter registration will become effective on April 9. Brooks' residency for his voter registration and that is also listed on his candidate application he filed with the city lists his home in the 500 block of Sea Side Lane in the Adriatica subdivision in McKinney. However, his home has not yet been built in Adriatica. Brooks said on March 17 that he and his wife live in and own a townhome in the 300 block of Mozart Way, in The Symphony subdivision in McKinney and they are building a home in Adriatica.
