Free, fun and inexpensive events offered this Memorial Day weekend throughout McKinney

Memorial Day weekend in McKinney features many inexpensive and even free events for people of all ages to enjoy. They include the free, annual Pecan Grove Cemetery Memorial Day ceremony and the free, annual Ridgeview Memorial Park Memorial Day ceremony, both on Mon., May, 25, the second annual, free Smiles for Habitat concert on Sun., May 24 in the Adriatica residential and commercial development, to the opening of The Heard Museum's Native Texas Butterflies House on Sat., May 23 for under $10 per person. Heard Museum unveils Native Texas Butterflies House on May 23
Native Texas Butterflies House on display until Sept. 30

The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary will allow people to be immersed among native Texas butterflies in the Heard beginning May 23 in the museum's Native Texas Butterflies House. The house will feature monarchs, Julia Longwings butterflies and Question Mark butterflies.

The Heard also has summer camp sign-ups going on now with new discounts available. Admission is $8 adults, $5 for kids ages 3 to 12 and senior citizens. For more information contact The Heard at 1 Nature Place at www.heardmuseum.org or by calling 972-562-5566.

Smiles for Habitat free concert returns to Adriatica on Sun., May 24

The Smiles for Habitat free concert will return to Adriatica this year and will feature the country bands Little Big Town, Lone Star Attitude and local rock band The Maylee Thomas Band on Sun., May 24.

The free concert will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. behind or north of Dr. Buchanan's Orthodontics office in the Adriatica development located at the southeast corner of Stonebridge Drive and Virginia Parkway in McKinney. All proceeds will benefit the North Collin County Habitat for Humanity's construction of a home for a local family. Full article

Local veterans honored at two Memorial Day celebrations set for May 25

McKinney residents will once again get to honor the men and women who helped fight for America's freedom in the 25th Annual Pecan Grove Cemetery Memorial Day Program at 9:30 a.m. on May 25 at the Pecan Grove Cemetery at the southeast corner of State Highway 5 and Industrial Boulevard.

The event will include a community picnic barbecue, a World War II stearman flyover, a performance by the McKinney ISD Middle School All-City Band, and a presentation of colors by the McKinney Police Department.

Boy Scouts of America Troop No. 303 will perform the Pledge of Allegiance. Veterans who attend are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Guests are invited to bring their lawn chairs and an American flag.

War veteran and McKinney resident Harry McKillop, President of the Pecan Grove Cemetery Association, is organizing the event.

Ridgeview Memorial Park ceremony set for May 25

Vietnam War veteran Ronnie (RD) Foster and members of the VFW Post in McKinney will also place American flags on veterans' graves and hold a ceremony for veterans buried at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, just south of SH 121, where hundreds of former McKinney residents are buried, at 1 p.m. on Mon., May 25.
